► (1907-99) Director cinematográfico francés. Sus películas son una incansable búsqueda de lo humano a través de la más estricta sobriedad clásica. Buen ejemplo de ello es: Un condenado a muerte se ha escapado (1956), premio a la mejor dirección en el Festival de Cannes 1957.

Director de cine francés. Trabajó como pintor y fotógrafo antes de realizar su primera película en 1934. Su primer largometraje Los ángeles del pecado (1943) estableció su estilo austero e intelectual. Reconocido por su intensa indagación psicológica y por someter la trama a la imagen visual, también dirigió Diario de un cura de campaña (1950), Un condenado a muerte se ha fugado (1956), Pickpocket (1959), El azar de Baltasar (1966), Lancelot du Lac (1974) y El dinero (1983).
